Massive MacKeeper data breach

Published December 17th, 2015 at 1:06 PM EST , modified December 17th, 2015 at 1:06 PM EST

Kromtech, the developer of MacKeeper, has suffered a major breach that has exposed more than 13 million users’ data.

Chris Vickery, a security researcher who has uncovered a number of similar data breaches in the past, found that a Kromtech database full of sensitive data was accessible over the internet… without any login required.

I have never used that junk software on my mac.Looks like a good choice on my part. What gets me is why so many sites have ads from this company.

    • Thomas says:

Because the MacKeeper folks run one of the most aggressive advertising campaigns on the planet. They were even able to get positive reviews in many popular Mac periodicals a couple years ago, before the evidence that MacKeeper is crap had accumulated. (Which should tell you something about the quality of the reviews in Mac magazines.)

  • Steve Balmer says:

There is nothing dishonest about MacKeeper.
Install it and it keeps your mac from working.

    • U.N. Owen says:

Not true AT all, ‘Mr. . Balmer…’

Your Mac keeps your Mac running. Period.

Software like this – and the belief it, and you purport – is more applicable, but, even the less so, in recent years – in the PC world, but, NOT – EVER Macs (and an aside, ‘Mr. Balmer;’ I clearly said P.C.’s).

The ONLY thing software like this does(possibly) does, is NOT interfere with the Mac.

I’ve NEVER had it, nor anything similar, and I’ve had Mac since more than likely before you even existed. I do/go ‘questionable’ places, things, and not ONCE have I had a ‘problem’ which something such as this ‘Rube Goldbergian’ nonsense need ‘handle.’

The Mac software is far and away MORE robust, than some ‘bolted-on’ thing, such as this could even handle, much less need to.

In simplest terms, as far as the Mac’s concerned, about garbage like this running; this trivial, unnecessary waste is like a mouse scurrying underfoot of an Elephant. The elephant doesn’t need, nor notice the mouse to function.

      Same here.

      ‘Mr. Balmer…’

      • Mr Obvious says:

Mr Balmer said “Install it and it keeps your mac from working.” Unless it’s a typo, I think he agrees that MacKeeper is junk.

  • Dallas Burgher says:

Who would be surprised by this? MacKeeper is basically spam so I don’t think they are going to be concerned about anyone’s data security.
