ChatZum discovered in another installer

I have written about ChatZum before, when it was being added to installers downloaded from Softonic. Although Softonic never admitted to doing anything wrong, other than installing the adware even when users opted out during installation, I have at least not seen any signs that this misbehavior has continued. However, ChatZum has nonetheless resurfaced, with a slightly different form, in another application’s installer.

ChatZum adware added to VLC on Softonic

It was brought to my attention today by an astute reader that there is a copy of VLC, currently being hosted on Softonic, which has had adware added to it. Of course, I had to investigate, and what I found is very concerning. That report turns out to be completely true, and worse, the adware installs components on your system even when you opt out of installing it!
