MacDeals adware found on file sharing site

Posted on July 6th, 2014 at 8:45 AM EDT

A reader brought a new piece of adware to my attention last week, called MacDeals. This adware appears to be fairly simple, consisting of nothing more than Chrome and Firefox extensions. More interesting than the adware (which I have added to my Adware Removal Tool) is the distribution method.

Avast installs adware!

Posted on July 4th, 2014 at 8:40 AM EDT

It would appear that Avast has joined the ranks of adware peddlers, as reader Fred Maxwell brought to my attention yesterday. Sometime around December of last year, a SafePrice option was quietly added to the avast! Online Security browser extension. This extension is available for Chrome and Firefox, but apparently not for Safari as far as I can tell.

Vidx adware pretends to be video plugin

Posted on May 23rd, 2014 at 8:55 PM EDT

Something called Vidx has been teasing me for a little while now, with some tantalizing hints but no concrete leads. Today, one of my colleagues pointed me to a website where it can be downloaded. I’ve spent quite a bit of time playing with it today, and it isn’t much different from other adware, except for one particular trick.

Adware Removal Guide : Vidx

Posted on May 23rd, 2014 at 8:07 PM EDT

Vidx iconVidx is adware that pretends to be a video player browser plugin. In actuality, it is no such thing. It provides no video playing functionality whatsoever.

This adware is quite sneaky, in that it uses a slightly different variation of the name each time you install it. Thus, it’s slightly more difficult to provide removal instructions, or an automated removal script… but only slightly.

For more information on this adware, see Vidx adware pretends to be video plugin.

Adware Removal Tool

Posted on May 2nd, 2014 at 12:01 PM EDT

The Adware Removal Tool has been removed.

This tool was discontinued some time ago and replaced with AdwareMedic. It detects adware more reliably, and detects many things that the Adware Removal Tool never did. If you have found and used a copy of the old Adware Removal Tool, be aware that it cannot be relied on at this point, and you probably still have adware components installed. It has been removed to prevent people from using it, and then believing that they have removed all adware when they probably have not.

Adware Removal Guide : Jollywallet

Posted on April 8th, 2014 at 5:20 AM EDT

Jollywallet is a browser extension that poses as a shopping app. It directs you to some questionable sites for shopping, however, and will display ads and sponsored links in your browser. Fortunately, it is easily removed.

Mac adware menace continues

Posted on April 7th, 2014 at 7:05 PM EDT

Over the last couple months, I’ve seen an explosion in reports of adware infections. Just in the last four days, I have seen at least a couple dozen reports of GoPhoto infections alone. The threat of adware, a problem for Windows users for years, appears to be coming into its own on the Mac. Today, I found an adware installer that seems to be the epitome of the adware menace.

Adware Removal Guide : VSearch

Posted on February 25th, 2014 at 1:30 PM EST

VSearch is one of the most common adware programs, commonly found in fake “video streaming” installers. It originally began as a fake torrent downloading app, under the name Downlite, but this name hasn’t been seen in some time now. VSearch displays pop-up ads and redirects the user to a different search engine.

VSearch was one of the first modern adware programs to be identified as malicious by Apple, following an episode of blocking this site and the AdwareMedic site on Macs infected with this adware. Newer variants of VSearch have not been similarly blocked, however, and are still a threat.

Adware Removal Guide : Savekeep

Posted on January 28th, 2014 at 2:20 PM EST

Savekeep is an adware browser extension, with an accompanying app whose purpose is unknown. (It simply opens the default web browser, then quits.) The extension causes ads to appear on pages that should not normally contain them. It has been seen being installed alongside InstallMac, as part of an adware-riddled installer that appears to be an installer for some other legitimate piece of software.
